Background of the study
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has emerged as a significant developmental condition with varying degrees of societal understanding. In Eket Local Government, local perceptions of ASD are influenced by cultural beliefs, limited awareness, and traditional interpretations of behavior (Inyang, 2023). The stigmatization of individuals with ASD, often viewed through the lens of superstition or moral judgment, creates barriers to early diagnosis and intervention (Etim, 2024). Despite growing global awareness, misconceptions persist in many local communities, hindering the integration of affected individuals into mainstream society (Udo, 2025). This study seeks to assess community perceptions of ASD, investigate the sources of prevailing attitudes, and explore the implications for early intervention and support services. The research emphasizes the need to align traditional beliefs with contemporary clinical practices to improve outcomes for individuals with autism.
Statement of the problem
In Eket Local Government, pervasive misconceptions about autism spectrum disorder contribute to delayed diagnosis and limited access to support services. These misperceptions, rooted in cultural and traditional beliefs, adversely affect the well-being and social integration of affected individuals (Inyang, 2023; Udo, 2025). The lack of awareness and adequate educational resources creates an environment of stigma and isolation, hindering both early intervention and community acceptance. Addressing these challenges is essential to promote a more informed and supportive approach to autism within the local community.
